Milford Stud
Red Heights
1999 160cm AHC (2008 expired) dark bay TB x gelding
Red is a beautiful large hack type gelding who is unshown to date. He has been owned by me (Sophie - youngest member of the Milford stud) since May '08 and in that time he has attended dressage clinics, competed successfully at unaffiliated dressage and done a lot of hacking!
He came with me to university in September 2008 where he stayed on working livery and was a true gentleman. We bought him with every intention of showing him (and as such had him measured in 2008) however due to a lack of time he has never reached the show ring. He came home from uni in June 2009 and has been basically out of work since due to lack of time.
Red is a lovely person to deal with and behaves very well even when not in regular work (he has been ridden a couple of times a week at the very most since February). He is good to hack, bomproof in traffic and absolutely loves being fussed with. He is snaffle mouthed and forward going and has an incredibly willing attitude to schooling, always trying his hardest.
Red will live in or out however he is best suited to a routine as he doesn't settle in his stable when he only comes in for a few hours a couple of times a month, as he does at the moment. He happily stayed in with minimal turnout last winter (and occasionally none when the weather was very bad) and didn't get wound up and even when he had no turnout he could be ridden straight from the stable without lunging etc.
Red is not naughty in any way but he is a sensitive TB-type with a soft mouth and he picks up on rider tension very easily so would be best suited to a confident rider. Absolutely definitely not anyone who will hang onto his mouth! He would be no trouble for someone used to riding horses but he is definitely a horse and not a big pony temperament-wise!
Red has no lumps, bumps or allergies, loads well and can be left tied up for the farrier. He can sometimes be strong in hand but this is manageable.
Red does crib bite but in the time I've had him this hasn't caused a problem. I found the article in H&H issue 03/09/09 "Are crib biters better competition horses?" struck a chord with me as Red is an incredibly intelligent horse and a very very quick learner.
I have done a very small amount of jumping with him (I am not into jumping!) and Red absolutely loved it and showed huge potential and natural talent. He jumped anything he was put at no matter how he met it and no matter how much of a hinderance I was! His sire competed to a high level at eventing and dressage and Red would do well in either sphere.
Red is for sale due to a lack of time and funds. A 5* home is of upmost importance.
Apologies for the plaits in the pictures, I only plaited him for the photos and so hadn't thinned his mane!
